Newburgh Superintendent Jackielyn Manning Campbell has been suspended pending an ongoing investigation, the Newburgh Enlarged City School District board announced on the district website Monday night.
In a statement, board President Christine Bello said the district was fully committed to sharing information about the decision in a timely manner, but was bound by confidentiality rules, which limits what it can share.
"The Board acknowledges the deep impact this situation has had on the community and we remain committed to fostering a safe and inclusive environment for all our students, staff, and community members," Bello said. "We ask for your patience and understanding as we navigate this process and work towards resolutions that reflect our shared values and commitment to unity."
Bello started in the district in May 2022. She has worked as an educator for more 26 years, serving as teacher, assistant principal and principal. She worked as acting superintendent of the New Rochelle City School District prior to coming to Newburgh.
"The Board understands the concerns and emotions surrounding this decision," Bello said. "Our priority is to ensure fair and thorough processes while meeting our commitments to the proper governance of our school district."
The board said the decision "was made in accordance with legal requirements and the commitment to uphold the highest standards of integrity and accountability."
