A brush fire in Sullivan County is out after injuring three firefighters and destroying at least 27 buildings.

The scene unfolded earlier Wednesday at two separate properties on Gamble Road in Fallsburg. Route 42 between South Fallsburg and Fallsburg was briefly closed, but later reopened to traffic.

The public safety commissioner says one injured firefighter had an arm injury, while two others faced heat exhaustion.

Officials still don't know the cause of the fire. They say it brought out almost 40 fire companies, burning around six acres of land.

During the response, the county fire coordinator detailed some of the challenges they were facing.

"The wind is an issue right now," Sullivan County Fire Coordinator John Hauschild said. "It keeps picking up and changing direction on us. We work on one structure, and next thing we know, another structure is involved, and it's just a domino effect. It's really hard to get a handle on it."

Officials are reminding everyone about the state's outdoor burning ban through May 14.
