While my lawn is still looking brown and dry due to a lack of rain along the south shore of Lake Ontario, many of our communities are experiencing well above average precipitation this month.

What You Need To Know

  • Summer rain can be hit-or-miss

  • Rochester is having one of its wettest Julys on record

  • More rain this week should push the official rainfall ranking higher

The official precipitation measurement taken at the Rochester International Airport is 5.79 inches through July 26th.

Rainfall totals for the past 30 days as of July 27, 2020. New York State Mesonet

This makes July 2020 the 10th-wettest on record and likely to climb higher on the list with showers and storms in the forecast. It is also the wettest we have been in July since 2010.

Rochester Top Ten List

To have large differences in precipitation amounts during the summer months in Rochester and the Finger Lakes is common. During the summer months, the majority of our rain comes from scattered showers and thunderstorms.

These can bring intense rainfall to one community, while another community just a few miles away receives little to none.  These storms can also cause flash flooding as we saw on the 27th in Medina, Orleans County

Be sure to check back August 1st to see the official July 2020 numbers.
