It’s that time of year when the temperatures start to spike, the humidity feels uncomfortable, and the high angle of the sun is beating down on these longer days.
It's these ingredients that we start to monitor this time of year for storms. Thunderstorms are a staple in our forecast from spring right through the fall but not all storms are created equal.
An atmosphere that possess what meteorologist call severe weather parameters is when we let you know to be "weather aware."
Severe weather parameters are conditions in the atmosphere where it’s not only favorable for thunderstorms but allow thunderstorms to thrive. Stronger winds, more moisture for heavy rain, and an atmosphere where parcels of air can rapidly rise are all things we look at as a sign that things could turn active. When a meteorologist sees that all signals are indicating we could have storms that are high-impact to our viewers, we sound the alarm and start using the term "weather aware" to let you know to pay attention to the forecast and your surroundings if outside.
