Q: What are the laws regarding the unmarked pedestrian crosswalks? Aren't cars supposed to stop when a person enters the unmarked crosswalk? I live in Madison County Oneida and my mother and I walked in to the crosswalk the other day and most of the traffic didn’t stop. This happens a Lot on Route 46 and on Broad Street in Oneida, N.Y. Also, what is the fine when people don't obey this law?
A:What a great and timely question now that we all be outside walking more! For your question, the NYSDOT has a quick and clear response! Walkers have to wait if the crosswalk is NOT marked. Be safe and wait your turn!
Vehicles must yield the right of way to pedestrians at plainly marked crosswalks and at intersections where stop signs or flashing red signals are in place. Pedestrians must yield the right-of-way to vehicles when crossing outside of a marked crosswalk or an unmarked crosswalk at an intersection.
