A viewer reached out and feels there needs to be more signage at Thruway toll booths. She points out that if you’re traveling from I-481 to the 34A toll booth (DeWitt/Oswego), once you pay your toll, there is no sign to tell you what lane to go to if you want to travel east to Albany or west to Buffalo.
We reached out to the Thruway Authority, and they quickly sent pictures of signage that is just past the toll plaza on the Thruway to either the east or west. We were happy with their answer at first, but after speaking with the viewer again and examining road maps, we saw her point better. There are signs, but only one set, and they are after a sharp curve and immediately above where cars need to jockey to get in the correct lane to exit appropriately.
So I went back to the Thruway to better explain the concern and see what their thoughts are on this exit's signage.
They told me they passed this comment onto the engineering department at the Thruway Authority.
"Also, with the rollout of cashless tolling system-wide, all toll plazas will be removed and all interchanges redesigned over the next two years, including this specific interchange. At this time, no signage will be moved; however, our engineers will take this into consideration when reconfiguring the interchange," the Authority said.
So this Traffic Inbox question is now on the Thruway's radar as they plan the redesign of I-90 at I-481 Exit 34A.
