The New York state Democratic Committee on Wednesday officially designated U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand as their candidate for another term representing the state in Capitol Hill's upper chamber.

The nomination puts Gillibrand's name on the ballot as the official Democratic candidate.

“Since her very first day in office, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand has been a relentless champion for New York families, working across the aisle to deliver real results for our state,” state Democratic Committee Chair Jay Jacobs said in a statement. “From delivering health benefits to 9/11 first responders and our veterans, to passing anti-gun trafficking legislation to bringing home half a billion dollars for local projects, Senator Gillibrand delivers for New York."

First appointed by Gov. David Paterson in 2009 to fill replace Hillary Clinton after she was nominated to be secretary of state in the Obama administration, Gillibrand is seeking her third full term in the U.S. Senate. In her last re-election in 2018, Gillibrand received 67% of the vote.

“Working across the aisle to deliver common sense solutions for New York families is my top priority and I’m proud of what we’ve been able to accomplish," Gillibrand said in a statement. "I’m grateful to lead the ticket in one of the most consequential elections in history and I’m confident we’ll deliver the state for President Biden and win the seats needed to win back the House.”

New York Republicans will meet in Binghamton next week to hold the party’s statewide nominating convention, where they are expected to nominate their candidate for the U.S. Senate seat. Republican businessman Josh Eisen is currently a candidate.
