To say Syracuse's men's basketball team hasn't played good ball this season could be seen by some as an understatment.
They've flashed some moments of brilliance so far but have struggled to put it all together. That was evident in a 75-71 loss to Georgetown last weekend, in which the defense held up for the most part, but the offense failed the 5-5 Orange when they needed it most.
"We couldn't score," head coach Adrian Autry said after the loss to the Hoyas. "We needed to score. We got a couple of looks in there, a couple of open shots. You know, that was I thought that was the difference."
It was a bit of a script flip to how SU has played so far this season. Offensively, the Orange have been able to score, but they struggle containing teams on the defensive side as the Orange look to put a full 40 minutes of complementary basketball together.
"Every game we've been in and we lost, we probably could have and should have won," forward Jyare Davis said on Saturday. "We have got to finish. We find ways to finish our games. I think as the season goes on, we'll get better."
"We got to figure it out and learn how to put both together," guard Jaquan Carlos added. "I mean, we can't be [a] one day offense and one day defense team. We gotta learn how to put it both together."
That starts on Saturday afternoon, when SU makes another trip to New York City to face former ACC foe-turned-Big Ten team Maryland. Tipoff against the 9-2 Terrapins is at noon Saturday at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
Autry knows a win would be big. But he added he understands there's still a lot of basketball to be played.
"We had a pretty tough, challenging non-conference schedule," the coach said. "We've got to keep moving. You know, you can't stop. Keep improving on things, tweaking things as the season goes, getting better, getting better. And we're still waiting on a timeline on [junior guard] JJ [Starling] to see when he comes back."
