Syracuse men's basketball coach Adrian Autry has all the confidence in the world in junior forward Chris Bell, especially after a strong showing against UAlbany on Tuesday night.
“He showed more of his game today, by getting to the basket, a couple of pull ups," said Autry. "He's trying to get some and-ones by off movement, so that's good, because now when his shot starts to come back, he's going to be really tough.”
Things haven’t always come easy for Bell this season. His shooting, particularly from 3-point range, hasn’t been up to his standards. Bell has gone as far as calling it the first real slump he’s been in. It's a slump he hopes to break on Saturday against rival Georgetown.
But he said he is getting creative in finding ways to get out of it.
“Honestly, I did some stuff that Kobe [Bryant] and [Michael Jordan] used to do," Bell said. "They used to watch their own highlights before the game, just that type of stuff, and then watch some Klay [Thompson] highlights. It's fun to watch Klay, because he will shoot 20 shots and miss all 20, and he's still going to shoot the next one. So just doing those type of things and honestly, just listening to my family, them telling me everything is going to be all right.”
He’s enlisted the help of former Orange guard Joe Girard III as well. Girard would occasionally draw the ire of fans when his shots didn’t fall.
“I said, ‘Joe, when you’re having a bad shooting day, how do you get through it?’ He said, 'I just stick to my stuff,' " Bell said. " 'I stay off social media and I stick to my routine,' and I was like, I think I'm gonna do the same things. And just I took a little advice from him.”
Bell also tries to find an inspirational quote.
“I feel like [with] social media, sometimes your phone will pop up things for you that are actually meant for you," Bell said. "So I'll post with a nice little quote of the day and they make me feel better. Keeps me uplifted and just remember to always just work on my stuff, stay in the gym and that's about it.
“You got to believe in yourself. I think that confidence comes from yourself and the things that you do everyday with preparation. So when I realized that, I was like, I shoot every single day, I work on my stuff every single day. It's just those type of things, normal things."
