Q: When will “cashless tolling” begin on the New York State Thruway in the Capital Region?
A: As you know, “cashless tolling” will mean that you will no longer have to stop and start at a toll plaza to pay. Even with your EZPass, you still have to slow down through the toll plaza at the exit you are using. With “cashless tolling,” this will no longer be necessary.
We contacted a Thruway Authority spokesperson who explained the “cashless tolling” system. Instead of going through toll booths, motorists will drive under a gantry with state of the art sensors. Those sensors will read your EZPass and capture an image of your license plate. A bill will be mailed to the owner of the vehicle, so make sure your address is up to date with DMV. It is New York state law that drivers must update addresses with the DMV within 10 days of moving.
The Thruway Authority hopes to have cashless tolling in place statewide by the end of December 2020. Then the removal of the old toll booths will begin.
