The New York Yankees have added a third player with Capital Region ties.
Relief pitcher Matt Gage, who pitched sparingly last season for the Houston Astros, was claimed off waivers Monday by the Yankees, the team announced Monday.
Gage, a Broadalbin-Perth graduate who went on to pitch at Siena, made five appearances for Houston last season and was designated for assignment last week. He also pitched for the Toronto Blue Jays in 2022.
Over 19 2/3 innings in two seasons, Gage, a left-hander, has a 1.83 ERA. Most of his last three seasons have been spent between the majors, the minor leagues and Mexico. The 30-year-old was originally drafted out of college by the San Francisco Giants in 2014.
Gage joins infielder Kevin Smith, a Columbia High School graduate who spent most of the last two seasons in the Oakland Athletics organization, as a Yankees offseason pickup. Smith signed a minor-league deal with the Yankees earlier this month.
Reliever Tommy Kahnle, a Shaker High School product, is also in the Yankees organization.
