Baseball can be pretty complex at times. Whether it’s the batting or the fielding, it’s all part of the game.
“It seems simple on the outside but when you dive in it’s a lot more complicated,” said Maddie Tse, a junior on the Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake varsity baseball team.
The intricacies of the game is what made Tse fall in love with baseball.
“I was really excited to play for this team, and I was excited to be able to grow and learn more from the game,” she said.
Tse is currently in her first season of varsity baseball. She is one of the very few female athletes in the section to accomplish this feat.
“I think it’s been the same with all the guys,” Tse said. “I mean I’ve grown up with them so a lot of them know me and have played with me before.”
Like most girls, Tse started playing softball in elementary school. However, she made the switch when her father was deployed. Tse’s older brother was playing baseball, so she joined him to make life easier on her mother only having to go to one field.
“My first coach was Dave Sunkist, and he made me fall in love with game,” she said.
Over the years, Tse has played every position except first base; from little league to travel, modified to junior varsity, and now varsity.
“She he was good. She was just as good as all the other guys, and they were right in there with her,” said Josh Hadcock, head coach of Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake varsity baseball team. “And she was very strong, and she competed, she competed with everybody.”
As a reserve player, he says Tse has been able to provide them depth in the outfield and on the mound this season.
“They all earned my respect by how hard they work and she’s right there with it,” he said. “She doesn’t take anything for granted. And it’s something I look for is people to work hard and that’s what she has done all the way through.”
As she continues to work on her craft, she’s looking to earn more at bats and playing time. She wants to contribute wherever possible to help Burnt Hills make a run at the sectional championship.
“I just love the game and want to be able to play as long as I can, and being a role model for some of the younger girls in the league,” Tse said.
