New York State Gaming Commission has banned horse trainer Bob Baffert from New York racing through at least July 2.

The commission said Monday that, with his 90-day suspension from Kentucky's horse racing commission being held up in court, New York also will honor the ban. This applies to NYRA tracks like Belmont and Saratoga.

"On April 1, 2022, the Kentucky Court of Appeals ruled against Mr. Baffert’s motion for emergency relief after being issued a 90-day suspension for medication violations. The suspension went into effect today," read a statement from the gaming commission. "New York is one of 38 racing states that honors out-of-state suspensions issued by regulators."

The bans in Kentucky and New York come after Baffert's horse Medina Spirit was disqualified after winning the 2021 Kentucky Derby due to a positive test for betamethasone, a banned drug. Medina Spirit, who died after a workout in California in December, was Baffert’s fifth horse known to have failed a drug test in just over a year.

The bans will keep Baffert out of this year's Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes, but if Baffert's ban ends after July 2, he could take part in the Saratoga meet, which starts July 14.
