In his final season at Shenendehowa, quarterback Mason Courtney has set lofty goals for himself and the Plainsmen's football team.

“Go as far as we can make it," Courtney said. "Win a Section II championship, but as of right now, we’re going game by game. This week is Shaker. We’re not thinking anything past that. You’ve got to take it one week at a time.”

While Mason excels on the football field, his first love has always been basketball. And the love for the hardwood was enough for him to miss the football season this past spring.

“It was one of the toughest decisions I’ve had to make," Courtney says. "I love football. I’ve been playing it ever since I was in second grade.”

What You Need To Know

  • Shen senior QB Mason Courtney is a leader of the team

  • He faced one of the hardest decisions of his life this spring, opting to not play football in a bid to further his basketball game

  • But now that he's back, he wants to lead Shen to a win over Shaker this Friday night

The chance to be scouted and play in the Amateur Athletic Union was too much for Mason to pass over. But as much as his presence was missed on the field, Courtney was there every game cheering on his brothers.

“I came to every single game," he said. "I was sitting on the parking lot on top of my car trying to cheer them on since they didn’t allow fans. It was definitely difficult, but I did what I thought was best.”

Now that Courtney has returned, he’s stepped into the leadership role and earned the respect of teammates and coaches.

“When Mason came back, it was just an instant lift to our team because the whole team was like, ‘Our quarterback is back,’" Shen head coach Brian Clawson said. "He’s an incredible athlete. A great quarterback. A leader, and we’re really excited to have him on the team this year.”

Courtney isn’t just a leader in sports. He’s actively involved with the Best Buddies program, connecting with those with developmental disabilities, giving back to those in need.

“It’s one of the best feelings going to Best Buddies, seeing your friends and seeing some of the other kids, and just having fun. Giving them a day they’ll remember for a long time,” Courtney says.

That is his biggest accomplishment so far. But as for Friday night’s game, he knows Shaker will be ready as he looks to etch his name into the storied rivalry.

“It’s one of the best feelings knowing you’re playing Shaker," Courtney says. "It’s Shaker week. We’re all excited, we’re all amped up, practicing harder, doing everything to prove that we’re the team to beat this year, and there’s no better feeling showing up Friday night and playing against Shaker. That’s really the best feeling you can have as a football player at Shen.”

Live coverage of the game begins at 7 p.m. on Spectrum News 1.
