In the south, two high school sports reign supreme: football and baseball. They are the two sports Davis Meche loved to play in high school.

But out of the two, one of them meant a little more. Growing up at a young age in Lake Charles, Louisiana, the Amsterdam Mohawks infielder knew his first love was always baseball.

What You Need To Know

  • Since Davis Meche was a little kid, he knew baseball was his first love

  • He excelled at the sport in high school, landing a roster spot with Mississippi State and helped the Bulldogs secure a College World Series championship this year

  • The Amsterdam Mohawks infielder's goal is to play professional baseball

“I noticed it at a young age playing summer ball growing up, probably around six or seven is when I really realized that’s what I wanted to do,” Meche said. “And after that everything just took off.”

Davis became a key player for Barbe High School; a four-year captain, guiding his team to a Louisiana state championship as a junior. This all came before landing at Mississippi State baseball, where in his first season, Davis and the Bulldogs made school history, winning their first College World Series title.

“It really was a dream come true," Meche said. "Every year just watching the College World Series be played and dreaming of one day getting to do it, but then it actually happens. It all went by so fast it didn’t even seem like reality. But it was the best experience of my life, no doubt.”

So it begs the question: How does a College World Series champion, who has spent all of his time in the south, end up in Amsterdam in the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League?

“You have to go where the competition is, and up here in Amsterdam, they’ve got it," Davis said. "It’s been good, fun baseball. Everyone enjoys and loves it. It’s a good place to be.”

With so much of his baseball career ahead of him, Amsterdam is the perfect spot to hone his craft.

“I’ve grown a lot," Davis said. "A lot on the mental side of the game is what our coaches like to work with us hardcore on. So the mental side of hitting and defense and everything is what they really focus on, and I think I’ve stepped up my game majorly.”

Like every player, Davis has one goal: play professional baseball.

“That has been my dream my whole life, and I’m still chasing it," David said. "I don’t think I ever will stop until I’m there.”
