The New York State Police trooper and tow truck operator hit by a passing pickup truck Saturday on the Northway have been identified.

Trooper Nicholas Abbondola "sustained multiple fractures and other injuries" after being hit by the truck during a traffic stop in the southbound lanes of I-87 on Saturday afternoon. He joined the NYSP in October 2023, according to state officials. He's hospitalized in stable condition, but will likely need more surgeries to treat his injuries.

The tow truck operator, 29-year-old Brett Dempsey of Clifton Park, is out of the hospital, but will "require a long recovery," according to officials.

State Police said that Abbondola had stopped a car on Saturday just before the Exit 6-7 off-ramp in Colonie, and the car was being towed due to violations. Both Abbondola and Dempsey were outside their vehicles when the pickup truck hit them. The driver of the pickup was arrested, and an investigation is ongoing.
