The suspect in the kidnapping of a 9-year-old girl from Moreau Lake State Park in late September has been indicted in Saratoga County court.
Craig Ross Jr., 46, was indicted on nine counts Friday morning, including kidnapping, rape and predatory sexual assault against a child. The top charge in the indictment, kidnapping, carries a sentence of 15-25 years to life in prison.
Ross was taken into custody in early October at his mother's house in Milton, following a massive search for the 9-year-old girl, who was found alive in a cabinet at the house, according to Gov. Kathy Hochul and New York State Police. The girl had vanished while riding her bike in the park on Sept. 30, prompting a weekend-long intensive search involving hundreds of search-and-rescue personnel. Two days later, officials say Ross drove to the girl's family's home and left a ransom note in their mailbox. A fingerprint match from the note, police say, led them to Ross.
Ross, through counsel George Conway of the Saratoga County Conflict Defender's Office, pleaded not guilty to all nine counts. He was remanded back into the custody of the Saratoga County Sheriff's Office; his next court appearance is scheduled for Dec. 21.
Saratoga County District Attorney Karen Heggen said the investigation in the case is ongoing, but declined comment on specifics of the case.
