For the first time since a 9-year-old girl taken from Moreau Lake State Park was rescued, the park will reopen to visitors.

The state's office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation announced Thursday that the park has reopened with more police patrols and park rangers on the grounds.

“State Parks are a source of relaxation and recreation for so many people, and we are committed to ensuring that sense of tranquility and trust for our patrons,” State Parks Commissioner Erik Kulleseid said in a statement.

In addition to the increased law enforcement presence, new security cameras were added ahead of the weekend, according to the parks department.

The girl who disappeared from the park while riding her bike, was found safe and unharmed Monday evening, and a 46-year-old male suspect in her disappearance was taken into custody, and later arraigned on a charge of first degree kidnapping.

The parks department and Park Police are reviewing the incident. In a statement, the department said it "will continue to identify any areas where the agency can make improvements to provide safe and enjoyable recreational and interpretive opportunities for all New York State residents and visitors."
