The investigation into a double-stabbing Wednesday near the state Capitol during what State Police said was a pro-Trump rally continues to develop.

A man from Rensselaer has been charged with stabbing two individuals in Albany's East Capitol Park, according to State Police.

Alexander S. Contompasis, 37, is charged with first-degree assault, second-degree assault, two counts of criminal possession of a weapon, and second-degree menacing, State Police said, adding Contompasis was at the rally as a counterprotester.

Contompasis is free on bond.

Albany County District Attorney David Soares released a statement on Friday asking for any witnesses with video footage or other information to come forward to aid in the investigation.

When reached for comment Thursday, Contompasis' attorney, Melissa A. Carpinello, said her client acted in self-defense.

"I believe that when the facts of this case come out they will show that my client was defending himself from an unprovoked attack by self-identified Proud Boys, a radical and racist organization," she said in a statement.

Two males, ages 36 and 40, were injured in the incident and taken to Albany Medical Center for treatment, police said. The 40-year-old male was in stable condition at the hospital. The 36-year-old male was treated and is expected to be released.

State Police made several other arrests related to the protest, both of protesters and counterprotesters.
