Things are getting back to normal in Selkirk following a chemical leak, but authorities are still keeping a close eye on the situation.

All road closures in the area have been lifted and businesses have reopened.

A styrene leak was noticed around 6 a.m. Tuesday morning and state and local authorities have been on scene at SABIC, a plastics company, ever since. The rail car has been secured, significantly reducing any risk to the public according to SABIC, but the car is still on the premises.

An internal investigation is happening at the company to find out how the leak happened, how long it had been going on, and how much styrene vaporized into the air.

“We're going to continue and have been monitoring air samples and environmental impact in the area around us,” said Adam Hornick of the Bethlehem Police Department.

“At this point, we have not seen anything alarming that would be cause for concern. Those air monitoring and those precaution measures are in place and will stay in place until the car is successfully off-loaded or mitigated.”
