Schenectady Police Chief Eric Clifford released additional information as the department investigates an officer's use of force during an arrest caught on camera Monday morning.

That video shows Yugeshwar Gaindarpersaud being detained by police after he was suspected in a tire slashing on Brandywine Avenue. Clifford says the district attorney's office was immediately called in and, along with police commanders, viewed the officer's body camera footage as well as the video posted on social media.

The chief says Gaindarpersaud struggled with the officer and later tried to take off once he was in custody. Clifford says the officer placed his knee on Gaindarpersaud's head "only as long as necessary to get him handcuffed" while calling for back up, adding the suspect was able to walk to the police car and remained conscious during the ride to the police station and, later, Ellis Hospital for treatment.

At no time did the officer try to "impair Mr. Gaindarpersaud's breathing or blood circulation," the statement read.

The incident spurred protest in front of Schenectady police headquarters Monday, where demonstrators expressed anger over what they saw as another incident of excessive force.

On Monday, Gaindarpersaud and his father spoke with Spectrum News, showing injuries to his head and neck he said he suffered during the encounter. Gaindarpersaud also said he did pass out in the police car and later woke up in the hospital.

“He was smashing my head into the concrete. I couldn’t move; I couldn’t do nothing,” Gaindarpersaud said in the interview.

Chief Clifford urged the public to be patient as the investigation moves forward and says he expects the officer's body camera footage to be released soon, possibly on Wednesday.
