Albany Mayor Kathy Sheehan and Police Chief Eric Hawkins and stressed Tuesday morning that Monday night's protests were made up of two groups of people -- one peaceful and violent.
Unrest flared up again in the city Monday night after crowds gathered on Henry Johnson Blvd. near Albany Police headquarters just before 10 p.m.
At one point, police said some threw objects and fireworks at officers and police deployed tear gas to disperse the protest.
Eleven arrests were made, including five people from outside the city.
This all followed a march through Albany during the afternoon and early evening hours. That protest wound through the city and remained peaceful, as police blocked traffic for demonstrators. Albany Police Chief Hawkins walked through that crowd, took some questions, spoke with organizers and even took a knee in solidarity with the cause.
