The 34-year-old victim of the fatal officer-related shooting in Schenectady was confirmed by an autopsy to have died of a gunshot wound, according to State Police.
Michael Wallace of Schenectady was shot on Tuesday morning and on Wednesday the autopsy was conducted.
Police responded to a residence at 780 Albany Street around 8 a.m. Tuesday, for a call of a man and woman fighting inside. Another caller said a man had pointed a gun at the building superintendent, which was later confirmed by the superintendent and building security.
When officers went to the second-floor apartment, police say, the door opened and a man pointed a gun into the hallway where the officers were standing. They fired their weapons and the door closed; the woman eventually left the apartment, while the man stayed inside.
After special operations officers were sent in they found Wallace, who was treated by paramedics and transported to Ellis Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The officers who fired their weapons were both placed on administrative leave, as per departmental policy. The SPD says it has asked the New York State Police to take over the investigation.
The woman involved in the incident was initially detained, but released; police don’t expect her to be charged in connection with the incident.
