As the Capital Region community continues to mourn the passing of Sister Monica Murphy, funeral arrangements have been released. Sister Monica's interment will take place Friday at 3 p.m. at the Saint Joseph's Provincial House in Latham.
Murphy was killed in a two-car crash Monday night.
She asked for a green burial before her passing and the family wants those who wish to attend to keep in mind that this type of burial does not use a casket and can be hard to watch.
Calling hours will be held in the chapel of the Provincial House following the burial Friday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., with a prayer service at 7 p.m.
Sister Monica's Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday at 9 a.m. in the chapel of the Provincial House.
Murphy is being remembered as a tireless teacher, loving friend, and spiritual guide. She was killed in a head-on collision in the town of Schroon. State police say she was traveling on State Route 74 when her car veered into the opposite lane, striking another vehicle.
Sister Monica was an educator for more than four decades, spending 34 years at Catholic Central in Troy. Most recently, she served as the campus minister there. She co-founded what is now the Pyramid Life Center, a place used for spiritual retreats in the Adirondacks.
Sister Monica's colleagues at Catholic Central and the Sisters of Saint Joseph's say they'll remember her humor, compassion, and the way she could walk into a room and light it up.
"She loved kids, she loved to work," said Sister Kate Arseneau with the Sisters of Saint Joseph. "She wanted to be helpful and to use the gifts that she had, which were many."
"She's definitely left big shoes to fill in a lot of places around the diocese," said Ridge Harris, the chairman of the Catholic Central board of trustees. "She was involved in many things and a guide for many people in other roles. I don't think she'll ever be replaced."
The driver and passenger of the other vehicle were transported to the hospital for minor pain and released.
