As Election Day approaches, candidates for New York’s 20th Congressional District are making their final pitches to voters.
The incumbent, Democratic U.S. Rep. Paul Tonko, who has represented the district since 2009, is seeking a ninth term in office. He's being challenged by Kevin Waltz, an Albany Law student looking to bring a different perspective to this competitive race.
The candidates are focusing on issues crucial to the district’s residents. Tonko is highlighting his commitment to protecting reproductive rights, tackling climate change, and promoting social, racial and economic justice. He believes these issues are fundamental to ensuring a fair and equitable future for all.
Waltz, on the other hand, prioritizes public safety by curbing crime and securing the borders. He is also addressing the migrant crisis and the rising cost of living, emphasizing support for small businesses and farmers as key to economic stability.
Both candidates agree on the importance of addressing mental health and the opioid crisis, aiming to provide support to those in need. They each have unique plans for improving access to mental health services in the community.
The 20th Congressional District is made up of Albany County and parts of Saratoga, Montgomery and Rensselaer counties, and includes the cities of Albany, Troy, Rensselaer, Saratoga Springs and Amsterdam.
