The top Democrats and Republicans of the state legislative agriculture committees are calling for U.S. Senate passage of the Whole Milk for Healthy Kids Act in a letter sent to New York’s U.S. senators, Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand.
The Whole Milk for Health Kids Act would “reinstate” 2% and whole milk in schools. The legislation would overturn rules passed in 2010 in the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act.
The new legislation passed the House on bipartisan terms by a vote of 330-99 earlier this month.
In their letter, the members of the state Senate and Assembly agriculture committees, Democratic Sen. Michelle Hinchey and Assembly Member Donna Lupardo, along with Republican Sen. George Borello and Assembly Member Chris Tague, argue that the Whole Milk for Health Kids Act would “provide a great economic boost to New York farmers and dairy producers," and that restrictions on milk in schools are “based on outdated information.”
