NOTE: This story has been corrected to reflect that Tom Reale works for the Senate Republican Conference, not Senator Daphne Jordan.

Troy Mayor Patrick Madden will stay in office, having held off two challengers in Tuesday night's general election.

It was an eventful campaign leading up to Tuesday's vote, with Madden, a Democrat, besting independent challenger Rodney Wiltshire and Republican candidate Tom Reale. Reale conceded Tuesday night, but Wiltshire clarified Wednesday that he has not conceded.

Madden says his re-election campaign focused on issues, accomplishments, and goals for the next four years. He says he made hard decisions to put the city on the right path.

Moving forward, Madden says the focus is continuing to govern for all the people of Troy.

Reale has been at the center of some controversy in the last week leading up to the election, namely the nature in which he suspended it early last month, only to re-enter the race a week ago.

Reale, a U.S. Army veteran, said during a press conference last Tuesday that he was “bullied” by Rensselaer County Executive Steve McLaughlin and three other local Republican leaders into leaving the race. An audio recording of the alleged exchange that was acquired by the Times Union appears to reveal McLaughlin telling Reale during a profanity-laced tirade that “I run the show around here” and “I’m the boss.”

Reale claims the group threatened to withhold future support of State Senator Daphne Jordan. Reale works for the Senate Republican Conference.

At the time he initially left the race, Reale said he was doing it for family reasons, but when he re-entered, he said he was pressured by many people in Troy to get back into it.

Wiltshire noted that the Reale situation was a distraction and confusing to voters.

"He was always going to get some percentage of the votes because he was on the ballot, but when he says he’s out, he’s out of the race and then he comes back in and it tells certain voters, ‘Oh, well, there’s a viable candidate,’ and that’s confusing," Wiltshire said.

“The race was really between myself and Madden, and it benefited Madden having Tom Reale in the race.”
