The University at Albany is making its campus more energy efficient.
The university on Monday announced the launch of a $30 million project to decarbonize the campus. It will allow the school to shut off its gas-fired boilers in the summer.
There are also plans to remove gas-fired chillers at the power plant on its uptown campus and replace them with electric ones.
Overall, school officials said the project is expected to reduce the university's annual natural gas usage by an estimated 16%, even as it adds additional cooling capacity.
"At UAlbany, we are committed to serving our community," UAlbany President Havidán Rodríguez said. "That doesn't just mean the student, faculty and staff on our campus but also our larger community. Taking these steps to mitigate climate change is an important way we can support the health and well-being of the Capital Region and all of New York."
