The young girl who was rescued from Washington Park Lake in Albany after trying to help a 12-year-old boy who had fallen through thin ice has died, bringing the death toll from the incident to two, Albany police said Tuesday night.
The 11-year-old girl had been in critical condition, but succumbed to injuries, police said, adding that the Albany City School District had been notified and will continue offering support services.
The 12-year-old boy who fell through the lake's ice on Saturday also died, according to police.
Albany police say the boy attempted to walk across the lake toward the lake house and fell through the ice. Police say it is then believed the 11-year-old girl saw the boy fall through and, in an attempt to help, also fell through the ice.
Officials say officers and Albany firefighters located and rescued the girl upon arrival to the scene. She was treated at Albany Medical Center Hospital, police said.
The New York State Police underwater recovery team recovered the boy's body during a secondary search at around 7:25 p.m.
Both children were students in Albany schools.
Their names were not be released due to their age.
"The Albany Police Department extends its heartfelt condolences and support to the families and friends of both children during this difficult time," the police said Tuesday.
