In three years, Christian Brothers Academy has captured three Section 2 Class AA championships.
“It's status quo. It's what we're used to doing,” said CBA coach Bob Burns.
In his fourth year at the helm, expectations are the same for Burns, who is now just one win away from a fourth title.
“The culture is set here that this is what the expectation is,” he said. “So regardless of whether your first time doing it or your third or fourth time doing it, they know what's at stake and they know what they need to do.”
Undefeated CBA will look to defend its sectional title Friday night when it faces Shaker in the Super Bowl. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. on Spectrum News 1.
“We’re kind of prepared for that. We've been through this. It's kind of what we do in these three years now going on to our fourth,” said Alex Stabinski, a senior lineman for CBA.
The two teams met just a month ago, which resulted in a 27-19 CBA win. It’s the lone blemish on the Blue Bison’s 9-1 record.
“It wasn't a game that we felt like we really lost. It was a game we learned a lot from,” said Greg Sheeler, Shaker’s head coach. “Hopefully we’ve progressed and gotten better and have an opportunity to win Friday night.”
As the Brothers seek a four-peat, Shaker is looking for its first sectional championship since 2018.
“I think there's a lot of excitement with the kids,” Sheeler said. “This is a goal of ours all year just to be in a position to play in this game.”
“It means everything to us because I know we've all been putting in the work,” said Dominic DiBacco, a senior for the Blue Bison. “Even the lower class has been part of the work since the summer. It’d be amazing if we won.”
The Super Bowl will be played at Troy High School. For Burns, it’ll be bit of a homecoming. Troy is where he won two state titles and multiple sectional championships, including spring 2021, just before his move to CBA.
“It'll be a little bit different. It'll be nostalgic,” Burns said. “But I mean, at the end of the day, I got to get my team ready to play and play at the highest level we can.”
