A woman from Altamont was arraigned Monday afternoon and charged with killing her infant child whose body was found in 1997 near the Moses statue in Albany's Washington Park, city police said.
Authorities arrested Keri Mazzuca, 52, at around 8 a.m. Saturday, according to city police, who said she was charged with second-degree murder, concealment of a human corpse and tampering with physical evidence.
Her arrest stems from the discovery of a baby boy who police say was discarded in the city's park, and found deceased on a Sunday morning on Sept. 7, 1997.
Albany detectives, the New York State Police, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Albany County District Attorney’s Office investigated and confirmed the identity of the baby’s mother, who was arraigned in Albany County Court and held in the Albany County jail, city police said.
“I remember the shock and disbelief that was felt throughout Albany when the body of 'baby Moses’ was discovered," Mayor Kathy Sheehan said in a statement on Monday. "I want to commend the hard-working members of law enforcement, particularly within the Albany Police Department, who never gave up on seeking justice in this case."
