Local, state and federal law enforcement officials who are investigating a series of arsons and acts of criminal mischief from over the past 48 hours in the village of Broadalbin have taken a person of interest into custody, the Fulton County sheriff's office said Thursday afternoon.

The alleged arsons include incidents involving the Broadalbin Presbyterian Church on Tuesday afternoon, and St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, the Broadalbin Adirondack Country Market, and a warehouse on Rail Road Street on Thursday morning, and the throwing of a brick through a window late Wednesday at the Broadalbin Baptist Church, the sheriff said.

The suspect, who is in the custody of state police but was not identified, is expected to be charged Thursday evening, the sheriff said, adding that Fulton County District Attorney Michael Poulin will determine if any of the cases will be treated as “hate crimes.”

Also involved in the investigation are the county office of emergency management, the Albany Office of the U.S. Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, the New York State Police, the state Office of Fire Prevention and the Broadalbin-Kenneyetto Fire Company.

Anyone with additional information or video related to the alleged incidents are asked to call the sheriff’s office at (518) 736-2100 and press #1.
