A powerful thunderstorm with hard rain and high winds whipped through parts of Albany on what was a hot and humid Thursday afternoon, damaging trees, blocking roads, knocking out power to schools and even contributing to a partial building collapse.

Albany International Center and New Scotland Elementary School were without power Thursday night, and Pine Hills Elementary School had partial service, the Albany City School District announced on its website. Pine Hills will be closed Friday. The district said power "has not yet been fully restored" at the school, while Albany International Center and New Scotland Elementary are back to full power and regular schedules.

Approximately 3,600 people in the Albany area were still without power Friday morning, according to a National Grid outage map.

The district said it was able to restore power at Giffen Memorial Elementary School, which also went out, by about 8 p.m.

In the city's Warehouse District, Albany authorities responded to a partial building collapse at 13 Thatcher Street. The city said "several other buildings" had damage to their roofs.

There were no reports of flooding in the city, and the Alive at Five outdoor concert was canceled due to the weather.
