The New York State Department of Transportation on Wednesday released preliminary concepts of a reimagined Interstate 787 ahead of an open house on the topic scheduled in Albany.

In a video posted on its website, the DOT presents multiple designs for redeveloping I-787, a 1960s roadway that runs along Albany, the Hudson River and parts of Albany County. It also details the project's purpose, needs and objectives, which will be used to screen alternative project concepts.

The range of alternatives listed include a no-build option, or not making any changes; rehabiltating but not changing I-787; reconstructing it and relocating the Dunn Memorial Bridge; four different "boulevard" concepts; and two underground concepts, according to the DOT video.

The DOT was to provide an update on the project's Planning and Environmental Linkage Study at the open house, scheduled for 4 p.m. Wednesday in the Albany Capital Center. The meeting featured informational boards, interactive stations and a study team available for people to learn more about the project and where it stands.

The various concepts and initial cost estimates were expected to be presented at the open house, according to the DOT.

The DOT says it is working to identify potential transportation strategies that support and balance economic development and revitalization efforts, while enhancing walking, biking and public transportation access to the waterfront.
