The New York Yankees have added a second player with Capital Region ties.

Infielder Kevin Smith, a Columbia High School graduate who spent most of the last two seasons in the Oakland Athletics organization, signed a minor-league deal with the Yankees on Monday, as reported by Martín Gallegos of MLB.com.

Smith himself alluded to the signing on Twitter Monday, posting a photo of himself as a child wearing Yankees gear with the text “Headed Home for 2024.”

Smith, 27, has played 114 major-league games between the A’s and Toronto Blue Jays between 2021-23. In 49 MLB games last season for Oakland, he hit .185 in 135 at-bats. In Triple-A ball with Las Vegas, however, Smith batted .324 with 16 home runs and 46 RBI, with an OPS of 1.025.

Defensively, the infielder had a combined .966 fielding percentage in the minors in 2023.

Smith joins reliever Tommy Kahnle, a Shaker High School product, as a Capital Region native in the Yankees organization.
