The city of Albany and Crime Stoppers are offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the individual or individuals responsible for the fire that destroyed the historic Kenwood Convent and former Doane Stuart School, city officials announced.

While the cause of the March 23 blaze remains classified as “undetermined,” the Albany Fire Investigation Unit has ruled out electric, gas and spontaneous combustion as the source, and strongly believe it was started by a human, Mayor Kathy Sheehan said.

However, authorities said they don't know yet whether the fire was accidentally or intentionally set due, in part, to the strength of the blaze, which burned potential evidence.

"Fire investigations can be very complex. From the moment this devastating fire was called in, Albany police detectives have been working closely with fire investigators from the Albany Fire Department and New York State to determine the cause and identify any individuals who may be responsible," Albany Police Chief Eric Hawkins said in a statement.

The investigation into the fire remains "very active," he said. Police continue to review physical and digital information, as well as eyewitness accounts from before, during and after the fire.

Anyone with information is urged to contact the Albany Police Department Detective Division at (518) 462-8039. Anonymous tips may submitted online at www.capitalregioncrimestoppers.com or by downloading the free P3 Tips mobile app.
