Resident assistants at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute have asked university leaders to recognize a union the RAs intend to form with the Office and Professional Employees International Union (OPEIU) Local 153.

In a letter sent to RPI President Martin Schmidt and the Board of Trustees this week, the RAs said unionization would promote RPI's values and help increase and retain staff.

"In conversations spanning the past few months, we have talked about how our responsibilities and lack of fair pay impact our ability to both effectively serve our residents as well as take care of ourselves as students," states the letter, which is signed by "RPI RA Union."

RAs are students who help supervise dorm residents, respond to student complaints and requests and plan activities. Most receive dorm housing and a stipend in return, but compensation varies.

"RAs are strong communicators, empathetic resources, critical thinkers and problem solvers, champions of inclusion, and enthusiastic leaders who have a direct influence on campus culture at Rensselaer," the RPI website states.

In their letter, the RAs said they want the university's support.

"Voluntarily recognizing a RPI RA union will position RPI as a leader in advocating for RAs who, in addition to pursuing our academic interests, play an integral role in the culture of residential life," they said.

A spokesperson for RPI said it's reviewing the matter.

“We greatly value and respect our Resident Assistants, and will respond to their request in due course.”

The RAs have planned a rally for 12:30 p.m. Friday in Beman Park.
