St. Peter's Health Partners pilot program offers cancer screenings for Albany firefighters. Medical professionals conduct many tests and procedures in order to detect cancer, such as lung, heart, urine and kidney ultrasounds. Results are usually provided within two weeks of the test taking place.

"Well, we've been stressing health checkups more with the newer guys,” Albany Fire Department Captain Joshua Kapczynski said. “There's more awareness in our practices, with our gear, and with other exposures on the job." 

According to the International Association of Firefighters, cancer is the leading cause of death for firefighters -- with 66% of firefighter-related deaths due to the disease. When they face and inhale chemicals that are harmful to their health, research shows that job-related exposures can contribute to chronic illnesses, such as cancer. 

Doctors at St. Peters say they’re speaking to other fire departments in the region in the hopes of expanding the program.
