Albany Empire wide receiver Darius Prince is always ready to make plays.
“Good ball, boy,” said Prince, to his quarterback after catching a pass in practice.
Whenever a coach calls his number, he’s prepared to catch, block, return kicks and now, even play defense.
“I enjoy doing it, to be honest,” Prince said. “I like going both ways. It shows I’m versatile. I can play both sides of the ball.”
The National Arena League returned to its original Ironman format this season, allowing the 2021 Offensive Player of the Year to start back-peddling again for the first time since high school.
“In my free time, I play flag football and I play in tournaments. And I do play defense,” Prince said. “But with equipment on, it would be high school.”
So far he’s chalked up seven tackles, two interceptions and a pass breakup this season. But offensively, Prince hasn’t slowed down.
He’s currently leading the league with 813 receiving yards and 26 touchdowns.
“My goal is always to be better than I was last year,” Prince said. “So I always want to build off of that.”
Recently, Prince racked up nine catches for 106 yards and three touchdowns in a win against Columbus to help the Empire move into second place.
With just three games left, the NAL defending champs are looking to make another run.
“We just got to take care of our business,” Prince said. “We go out there, we prepare like the way we know how to prepare, we go out there and play the game we know how to make the plays and we’ll be good.”
Albany travels to San Antonio this Saturday. The game against the Gunslingers kicks off at 8 p.m.
