Albany police are investigating a stabbing and shooting involving police and a suspect that occurred just before noon on Monday, when officers responded to reports of a home disturbance on the 100 block of Franklin Street, Albany Police Public Information Officer Steve Smith said.

Officers tried to take a male suspect at the scene into custody for outstanding warrants, Smith said. But when police attempted to apprehend him, he stabbed an Albany police officer in the arm with a knife, according to Smith.

That's when a separate Albany police officer shot the suspect once in the torso, he said.

The officer and subject were in stable condition, according to police.

Speaking a press conference at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Police Chief Eric Hawkins voiced support for the actions taken by police. He said the situation remains under investigation, and body camera footage of the incident will be released in the coming days.

In a statement, Mayor Kathy Sheehan commended the officers involved, saying they showed "tremendous restraint and resolve."
