Growing up, the Duffy sisters always played sports together. But being able to share the lacrosse field with each other has been quite an experience, and while the connection is always there, so is the competition.
“They’re always really fun to laugh around with,” said Brigid Duffy, senior midfielder for Queensbury. “But when it’s time to be serious, I think we all know how to reel it in.”
Brigid, Bayley and Kady Duffy all expect nothing less than the best from themselves and each other. That can mean cranking up the intensity and even humbling each other from time to time, especially when they all ended up on the same team this spring.
“It just shows how much we’re working out there, pushing each other,” said Bayley Duffy, a sophomore defender for the Spartans.
“They’re definitely my biggest critics, especially on the field,” said eighth-grade attacker Kady Duffy.
That strive for greatness has spilled over from the trio to the rest of the Queensbury girl's lacrosse team. The Spartans are currently 13-0 and one win away from claiming their fourth straight sectional championship.
“We’re going to have all three Duffys on the same team at the same time. It was like, ‘oh boy, can we handle that? Can they handle that?’” said head coach David Huth. “It was kind of an ongoing joke at that point in time, that all three of them were there at the same time.”
He said the sisters bring up the tempo in practice. Huth says the Duffys push each other to their absolute max, and that has led to their teammates trying to rise to that occasion as well.
“They get on each other and they do it in a way that makes them all rise to the next level, so that’s perfect,” Huth said.
Brigid Duffy currently leads the team with 67 goals and 36 assists. Kady Duffy is currently fourth on the team in points, while Bayley Duffy plays defense.
“There are times where Bayley will pass the ball to me in midfield from defense, then I’ll move it up to Kady on attack, and it’s just really cool being able to have. It’s like almost three of my own brains out on the field,” Brigid Duffy said.
As the season begins to wind down and the games become much more important, the sisters are more competitive and focused than ever. The goal is to win the section and make a run for the state championship, which is returning this year for the first time since 2019.
“I just know that they’re doing it for the good of me,” Kady Duffy said. “Having two people that you are really close with and you can go home and chat about games with, it’s really great,” Bayley Duffy said.
