The award-winning, Utah-based company Ice Castles has brought their popular experience to Lake George for the winter season.

For the last two months, crews have worked diligently to build a winter playground in Charles R. Wood Park.

It took roughly 25 million pounds of ice to create the the finished ice castle.

"We grow icicles overnight and in the morning. We have our workers come out and hand harvest every single icicle that we can," Ice Castles New York Event Manager Brad Buehlhorn said.

The structure is built with very little heavy machinery. Using a minimal wooden structure to line out the perimeter, nearly half a million individual icicles are hand placed, with a build time of about 4,000 man hours.

"We have bags to harvest ice, to keep the icicles cold, buckets for slush and mortar and our ice picks," said Buehlhorn.

The experience features fountains, an ice throne and ice-carved tunnels.

"A portion of how some of the castle is built is using inflatables. So we’ll inflate, cover it in ice, then we’ll deflate it and pull out the inflatables to create these tunnels and structures," said Buehlhorn.

One of the most popular attractions is the slides, which are made up of 160 ice blocks for kids and adults. Buehlhorn suggests coming at night to see the ice towers filled with color-changing LED lights.

"So, we have thousands of these lights in a pixel wall that are programmed individually, and every light that we have in the castle is embedded into the ice to create the affect that we do at night," said Buehlhorn.

There are five such ice castles across the country this year, each unique to its region. The Lake George version opens Sunday, January 23.

The crew hopes the experience will be a welcomed addition to Lake George’s Winter Carnival.

"We know there is a lot of winter activity up here already. We’re hoping that the ice castle can help drive some economic growth for a lot of the businesses in the area, especially like hotels and businesses along Canada Street. We just want to be here to be a good community partner," Buehlhorn said.

The Ice Castles are expected to be on display through most of February. Tickets can be bought on Icecastles.com.
