If you haven’t finished your Christmas shopping yet, there’s a pretty good chance you don’t have a Christmas tree either. This week’s adventure takes us to the town of Ballston in the Capital Region and Ellms Tree Farm.

The trees at Ellms are of course the main attraction with about 20,000 of them over 240 acres.

"And we plant them when they're a couple of years old. The seedlings come to us, a couple years old. And in the spring we have a whole process of planting, it's a busy few days. On average after eight years they're ready to sell," said Ashley Ellms DiPaola.

Ellms tree farm has been in her family since the early 1980's. Since then it has grown into well run sustainable operation that gives visitors more than just a tree.

"We talk about the whole experience, coming to the farm with the family," DiPaola said.

Hot chocolate, candy canes, Christmas music and a café are all a standard part the experience. But if you choose you can cut down your own tree. Ellms has four different kinds of trees to choose from: Fraser Fir, Balsam Fir, Concolor Fir, and Blue Spruce.

You can bring your own saw, or one will be provided for you. After cutting it down staff will help you carry it, measure it, and then put it in a machine called a “shaker” to get rid of the excess needles. A fresh cut will be provided if needed, then it’s bailed and prepared to take home.
