Siena College is requiring that all students attending classes this fall get vaccinated for COVID-19, pending full approval for the vaccine from the FDA, it announced Tuesday on its website.

Students can apply for a medical or religious exception to the COVID-19 vaccine.

The college also announced a change to its masking policy. Fully vaccinated community members are no longer required to wear a mask outdoors on campus when alone or in groups of 10 or fewer people. Requirements for wearing masks indoors remain in place, per the CDC.

"We anticipate changes to the indoor masking policy and other operations for the fall semester that will allow for the return of the full Siena experience. However, that is all predicated on a vaccinated community," the college's Coronavirus Ops Center Team stated. "We will continue to move toward 100% vaccination on campus, and in the meantime, as long as the virus’s presence on campus remains faint, we will begin to ease COVID-related restrictions for our vaccinated community members."

The team predicted that most colleges and universities will mandate COVID-19 vaccination, and it will ultimately become codified as part of state regulations.

On Monday, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said the SUNY and CUNY schools will require vaccinations for students coming back in the fall if the shots receive FDA approval.
