A Republican from Coeymans who made homophobic remarks in a video posted on Facebook resigned from the Albany County Legislature on Monday.

In a statement, George Langdon IV said, "During the past several days, I have taken time to reflect and consider how to best serve our community moving forward. It is with a heavy heart that I have decided to resign my seat at the Albany County Legislature."

Albany County leaders demanded that Langdon resign and apologize to the LGBTQIA+ community and Albany County residents last week for telling a public forum in Voorheesville, Return to Liberty Under the Constitution Seminar, "When you have homosexual relationships, it's not perpetual. Give them an island; they'll be gone after 40 years."

On Monday afternoon, Langdon apologized in a resignation statement.

"I again express my sincerest apologies to all those who were hurt by my rash and thoughtless statements," he said. "It was never my intention to single out or target anyone. I truly believe every individual should have the right to life and liberty in their pursuit of happiness. I’d like to thank all my friends for their unrelenting support, and my constituents for allowing me the honor of serving them."

Albany County Legislature Minority Leader Frank Mauriello, a Republican, said the caucus supported Langdon's decision to resign.

“His recent statements were offensive and wrong," Mauriello said. "He is apologetic and understands the hurtful nature of his remarks. I wish George well in all his future endeavors.”

Andrew Joyce, the chairman of the Legislature, said, "Mr. Langdon can no longer effectively lead, so he has made the right choice to resign.”

The seat will be filled by appointment.
