At the Open Door Mission in Glens Falls, the staff says they are prepared for these upcoming frigid days.
They’re expecting an increase in those seeking shelter. Director of Shelter Services Jamie Munyon says a learning center is one of the rooms that will be used during Code Blue.
“We fit about 10 men in here on these nights, cold winter nights," Munyon said.

So far this season, the shelter is averaging 13 people on Code Blue nights, according to President and CEO Kim Cook. But she says that number could reach as high as 30 with the coldest days of the year upon us.
“As people come in, we’re taking care of them," Cook said. "We’re giving them a bed and a meal, and keeping them safe.”
Safe, not only from the elements, but also COVID-19. Each person is screened at the door as they enter. Cook says those that show symptoms are separated from the rest. So far, she says it’s working, with no residents testing positive.
“We’re being as safe as we can, really keeping an eye on things," Cook said.
Cook says the numbers on Code Blue nights are down compared to last year. But overall, they’ve helped 89 individuals so far.
Rooms have been full recently, and Munyon expects it to remain that way heading into the weekend.
“We’ve been really blessed to continue to move forward in the midst of this hard time," Munyon said.
