Union College has announced the cancellation of fall sports this year.

The decision follows the June 30 announcement of the "Union Where You Are" plan for the return of students in the fall.

What You Need To Know

  • Union College won't play fall sports in 2020

  • The athletic department is still working on possible alternate plans for fall sports athletes

  • RPI, Union's chief rival, announced last month that it won't participate in fall sports

"The health and safety of our student-athletes, coaches, staff and entire community will remain our top priority," said Director of Athletics Jim McLaughlin. "In order to follow the measures required to protect all campus community members – including social distancing policies, required use of personal protective equipment and reduced off-campus travel – we will be unable to provide intercollegiate athletic competition in its traditional form during the fall season."

Despite the decision, coaches and staff are looking to develop new ways to keep student-athletes engaged safely in practices and strength and conditioning. The athletic department is also looking at possibilities like moving fall sports to the spring.

No decisions have been made regarding winter and spring seasons, although an announcement for these sports is expected by September 15.

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Union's main athletic rival, announced in June that it would also not play fall sports in 2020.
