Saratoga Race Course has wrapped up a record-breaking year.

“We were lucky enough this year to break the all-time handle record; that comes despite the fact we had to cancel an entire Saturday race card,” said NYRA Communications Director Pat McKenna.

In 2018, the course totaled around $676 million, according to the all source handle. This year, the track has surpassed that by a little more than $3 million, which is a new record.

“Quality racing interest in the racing [produces] interest in betting opportunities. That’s generally why you see those big numbers,” said McKenna.

Attendance at the track has been steady as well. There were 1 million visitors for the fifth consecutive year. It’s something organizers attribute to the die-hard racing fans.

Fans say it’s a great way to spend some quality time track side.

“It’s a family tradition for us to go on the last day of the meet,” said one racing fan.

The new five-day race week has also been seen as a huge draw for the track.

“People felt really positive about the Wednesday through Sunday schedule. The enthusiasm we saw on the big Saturdays was unmatched,” said McKenna.

Organizers say they look forward to doing it all again in 2020.

“Saratoga Race Course and the Saratoga meet really is a 40-day celebration of all that’s great about upstate New York and all that’s great about thoroughbred racing,” McKenna said.
