The 50-year-old man found shot in the back of his head in Cobleskill Thursday morning has died. A 17-year-old has been arrested in connection with the case.

According to police, troopers responded to Lamont District Road in Cobleskill around 12:45 a.m. Thursday, and located a victim with an obvious gunshot wound to the back of his head.

This violent incident has left neighbors upset and confused. They describe the 50-year-old victim, identified Friday morning as Timothy Oldorff, as kind and hard working.

“It is a little too close to home. I have no idea what happened,” said neighbor John Stanton.

Stanton says he knows the family who lives in the home where the victim was found.

“Great family man, so I’m in shock if it is truly him and can’t believe what happened,” Stanton said.

Oldorff was airlifted to Albany Medical Center and was previously listed in critical condition. The incident is under investigation as an attempted homicide.

“I just don’t know why it happened,” Stanton said.

The 17-year-old, whose name has not been released, faces charges including assault and criminal use of a firearm. He is being held at the Schoharie County Jail.

Investigators say there is no threat to public safety. Still, news of this violent crime in a family’s home hard to understand.

“I’ve been here 40 years and I can’t remember anything this bad, this close, as far as homicide or attempted homicide. That’s just not supposed to happen,” Stanton said.

State Police Troop G is handling this investigation. They did not provide any timeline for when new information would be released, or the names of those involved.
