On July 1, 1949, the Malta Drive-In theatre opened its doors to customers.

On screen that evening was a double feature of Abbott and Costello in “The Noose Hangs High,” and Roy Rogers in “On The Old Spanish Trail.”

“A lot has stayed the same, but a lot has changed as well,” said Tom Caro, a co-owner of the Malta Drive-In Theatre.

Seven decades later, double features continue to be the norm, now with "Toy Story 4" and "Aladdin."

But it’s no longer being shown on film. The theatre switched to digital in 2013.

“It’s been a quality improvement on the screen," said Caro, who owns it with his brother Ed.

They bought the local staple in 1988.

On Monday, the theatre reached a major milestone: the 70th anniversary of its opening.

“We came as teenagers and now we bring the kids, so we’ve been coming for over 20 years,” said Amanda Russell.

Her family are some of the locals that have been coming for decades. For Russell and others, going to the drive-in is a summer tradition.

“It’s a great place for families to come to relax, to get together with friends, enjoy the summer weather we finally get,” said Melissa LaMere, a Ballston Spa resident who came with her three kids.

Besides going digital, the theatre has two screens today. The snack bar has also grown to include treats like funnel cakes and deep fried Oreos.

It’s all part of the Caros’ efforts to keep old and new customers coming.

“We're here to stay as well, so hopefully we’ll be having this interview 5 years, 10 years, 20 years, from now,” Caro said.
